Glossy Abelia ‘Frances Mason’

When it comes to recommending a carefree shrub for the gardening-challenged, Glossy Abelia is hard to beat. Here is a shrub that is not picky about soil types, performs admirably in either sun or shade, is a fast grower and rarely bothered by pests or diseases. Futhermore, it can be used in a variety of ways, even as hedging and is evergreen!

Foliage: Glossy, small oval leaves, bright to dark green, bronze-tinged in winter, evergreen in average winter temps, leaves may fall in extreme cold snaps. Some varieties, like ‘Kaleidoscope’ and ‘Frances Mason’ have bright yellow and variegated foliage.
Size: 4 to 6 feet or more depending on the variety.
Growing conditions: Not picky about soil types but well-drained, moderately rich soils will give the best results. Plant in sun or shade. Flower production will be greater with some sun.
Pruning: When unpruned, plants have a graceful, fountain-like effect. Older canes can be removed to the ground to thin plants out. Light pruning can be done anytime during the season for a tighter, denser growing effect. Plants can also be sheared as hedges.
