Podophyllum ‘Spotty Dotty’

Off

Dramatic foliage plants are always welcome in a shade garden and here’s one that not only showcases big leaves but has striking and unusual patterns as well. Podophyllum delayii ‘Spotty Dotty’ is a mayapple that is a conversation starter and a must-have for the gardener who wants something different.

The large umbrella-like leaves emerge in early spring on reddish stems and can measure up to 12 inches or more. Maroon-colored spots adorn the outer perimeter of the leaves around the soft-green center. The plant yields another surprise if you investigate closely. Hidden underneath the leaves dangle a cluster of deep-red blooms. The flowers do not last long so keep checking for them in mid to late spring.

‘Spotty Dotty’ likes shady conditions or dappled sunlight and moist soil. The plants thrive in soil that is rich in organic matter so add a generous helping of compost to the planting hole. Do not fertilize with chemical fertilizers as they can burn the leaves. You can use a mild fertilizer like fish emulsion but add it sparingly (if at all). Keep plants watered during the dry summer. They also do well as pot plants. In the ground, plants will begin to spread after a few years of getting settled in.

Not as difficult to locate as it once was, you will often find it in our greenhouse in the Shade Perennials section.
