Since 1990, the Perennial Plant Association has selected one perennial per year that has exhibited exemplary qualities throughout the United States. For 2024, that perennial is Phlox ‘Jeana’ (last year’s pick was Rudbeckia ‘American Gold Rush’).

The Association’s selections are based on the following criteria:

  • Suitability for a wide range of climatic conditions
  • Low-maintenance requirements
  • Relative pest- and disease-resistance
  • Ready availability in the year of promotion
  • Multiple seasons of ornamental interest

Phlox ‘Jeana’ grows 4-5′ feet tall and has a profuse display of small purple flowers that are slightly smaller than other phlox. The flower display is impressive and lasts for several months beginning in June. The flowers have a spicy fragrance. This is a favorite plant for pollinators and attracts butterflies, hummingbirds and other insects. It should be planted in full sun in fertile soils with medium to low moisture. Plants should not be overwatered. Cut back stems by half after flowering to promote bushier growth.

The phlox is named for Jeana Prewitt, who discovered it growing along the Harpeth River near Nashville, Tennessee.
