Jasmine ‘Fiona Sunrise’

Off

You are probably familiar with Star Jasmine, the white-flowered vine that perfumes the garden with its intoxicating fragrance. It is one of the most popular and best-selling plants in our nursery. You may not be familiar with the ‘Fiona Sunrise’ jasmine (Jasminum officinalis), also known as “The Golden Poet’s Jasmine’. This lovely vine, with a golden-yellow hue and white flowers is a vigorous performer in the garden despite its delicate appearance.

It can grow to over 12 feet and can be used on a trellis, fence, a small structure or even as a cascading feature in a pot. It is easy to train and can be easily guided in any direction you choose. Sun to part shade is recommended. The jasmine is not particular about soil with the exception that it be well-drained.

It is hardy to zone 7 and has survived three winters in my garden. I found that a location with full harsh sun was too much for the foliage and transplanted it to a spot that gets a mixture of sun and shade. It took a year to get going but now it has scampered up to the top of an 8 ft. pergola and continues to grow. The profuseness of the canes makes it easy to prune and you can easily cut away limbs that get in the way.

‘Fiona Sunrise’ jasmine is also quite spectacular in the fall months when the color of the leaves intensify. On overcast days, the color practically glows. It can be effective when combined with other plants with darker foliage.
