‘Aphrodite’

Calycanthus floridus, also known by the common names of “Sweetshrub” and “Carolina Allspice”, is a large shrub of the southeastern United States. It performs quite well here in the Pacific Northwest, however, as evidenced in this local Vancouver garden –

The dark, maroon-colored flowers appear in late spring to early summer and are very fragrant, depending on the species. If possible, buy your plants when it is blooming to check the fragrance. Opinions vary on the scent but most describe it as fruity and reminiscent of strawberry or pineapple. The  medium to dark green leaves are large and dense and turn bright yellow in the fall. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types and has few pest problems. It is also reputed to be deer resistant.

Shrubs can grow from 4 to 10 feet. They perform well in a variety of conditions, including partial shade, woodland-type settings and also full sun. In its native habitat, it grows as an under-story shrub.

We currently offer two varieties – ‘Aphrodite’ and ‘Simply Scentsational”.
