Sweet Autumn Clematis

Off

Sweet Autumn Clematis (Clematis ternifolia) is a vigorous vine that is smothered in tiny white flowers near the beginning of autumn. The flowers are fragrant and will attract pollinators. The seed heads are attractive and can remain for winter interest.

This is a vine that needs a strong support, such a sturdy fence, trellis, arbors, gazebo or pergola. It is best situated in full sun for best flowering. Because of its rampant nature (it can grow 30 feet in a season), it should be pruned back to the ground in late winter or early spring. Flowers appear on new wood so avoid pruning in late spring or summer.

The vine is not fussy as to soil types, but a well-drained, moderately fertile loam, is best. Once established, they are drought tolerant.

Sweet Autumn Clematis is considered an invasive plant in the eastern United States. It is also poisonous to pets, so plant accordingly.
