Strawberry Tree
Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo) is a small evergreen tree with many desirable qualities. It is sometimes described as a shrub and while our retail stock indeed bears the resemblance of shrubs, in actuality the plants are medium-growing and soon become small trees. Compact varieties (such as the aptly named ‘Compacta’) are smaller but easily reach 10′ when happy.
A native of Southwestern Europe, the common name “Strawberry Tree” refers to the strawberry-like berries that appear in the autumn and winter months along with clusters of tiny blush-white flowers that are similar to Pieris or Lily-of-the-Valley. The fruits are edible but not very tasty. Other admirable qualities are the small, glossy evergreen leaves on red stems and the textured mahogany bark.
The Strawberry Tree is easy to grow as long as it has well-draining soil. It is drought-tolerant once established and will be fine with minimal summer water. It is not finicky and can take regular watering as well. Full sun or partial shade is fine. Choose a permanent location as its deep taproot means that it does not transplant easily.
