We all know that trees provide a colorful show in the fall but some shrubs are equally spectacular.
Here are just a few –
Amsonia hubrichtii is technically a perennial but creates a nice shrub-size effect with brilliant autumn color. The purple berries of Beautyberry (Callicarpa) are another fall highlight.
Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) offer a rainbow of fall foliage with an emphasis on red.
Sumac ‘Tiger Eyes’ (Rhus typhina) – the light green foliage turns yellow and then fades to orange and gold.
Red-Twig Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’) has beautiful gold leaves in the fall. After the leaves are gone, the bright red stems provide winter interest.
Burning Bush (Euonymous alatus) is one of the most popular shrubs for fall color. Give these plants plenty of room!
Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica) is a graceful shrub with arching limbs. Deep red and orange leaves can be expected in autumn.
Dwarf Fothergilla (Fothergilla gardenii) is a great shrub for shady gardens. Bottlebrush-like flowers appear in the spring. The fall foliage is an intense blend of reds and oranges.
Barberry ‘Orange Rocket’ is just one of the many barberry shrubs available. Some have yellow or gold foliage and others have red. The leaves will linger throughout the winter if there are no severe cold snaps.
