Pyracantha
When it comes to bright, colorful berries in the fall and winter landscape, few plants rival pyracantha. Also known as “Firethorn”, it is tough and vigorous plant.
Glossy, evergreen leaves (on most varieties) set off lacy white flowers in spring. These flowers will mature into orange/red berries in the fall and are very showy. In late winter, birds enjoy the berries.
Pyracantha is a tough plant and prefers drier soils. As with most plants, it is important to water well until they are established. After the plants are settled in, they grow fast and can become very large and unruly if not pruned. The thorns make this an unpleasant job! Therefore, it is advisable to choose your location well. If you want to avoid pruning and let the plant grow carefree, be sure and select a spot where it has plenty of room to spread.
Pyracantha can be used many ways in the landscape. They make vigorous and impenetrable hedges. They can also be used on a structure or strong fence. They are very attractive when espaliered.
There are many varieties of pyracantha available. Choose your selection wisely, paying particular attention to growth dimensions and berry color.
