Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria)

Off

Peruvian Lilies (Altroemeria) are among the most popular summer perennials and for good reason. The exotic lily-like flowers of this South American native come in an array of colors that are enhanced by striking markings. The flowers appear on 2-3 feet tall stalks and sometimes need staking. They make excellent cut flowers and are long-lasting in a vase.

Peruvian Lily likes a rich, fertile soil that is well-drained. Like clematis, they like their fleshy roots cool and their flowers in sun. To achieve this, mulch the root zone well or provide a groundcover to surround it. Full sun or partial shade is fine but shade from intense heat is recommended. Choose the location carefully as they resent being transplanted. While not necessary, during the blooming season, a well-balanced fertilizer will promote more blooms.

Cutting and pruning – It is advised to not use pruning shears when cutting Peruvian Lily. Instead, gently pull the stalk from the base with your hand.

Peruvian Lily is generally untouched by pests with the exception of slugs. Keep an eye out for them and treat accordingly.

This plant is named after Swedish naturalist Baron Clas Alstromer (1736-94), who was a student of famed botanist Carl Linnaeus.

We have a nice selection of Peruvian Lily in the greenhouse. These photos show some of our selections.
