Panicle Hydrangeas

Off

Hydrangea paniculata, also known as “Tree Hydrangea”, “Panicle Hydrangea” or “Peegee Hydrangea” is one of our most dramatic summer shrubs with large white cone-shaped blooms that slowly fade to pink shades as the blooms age. Unlike the Mophead hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla), these hydrangeas do best in full sun. They are super hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -40 degrees. They bloom on new wood and can be drastically bloomed at the end of winter or beginning of spring and still produce blooms in the summer. They can be grown as large shrubs (8 – 15 ft. tall and 8 ft. wide) or be limbed up as small trees.

They are best grown in soils that are well-drained and enriched with organic materials (at planting time, mix some compost or well-aged manure with your native soil). They can grow in full-sun or a partially shaded location.  Fertilize twice per year with a fertilizer for acid-loving plants – after pruning in early spring and later in summer, after the blooms begin to fade.

At Yard n Garden Land, we offer a wide selection of these hydrangeas in both shrub and tree form.

Our selections include:

‘Limelight’ – one of the most popular with large, greenish-white blooms that age to pink, red and burgundy.

‘Little Lime’ – If space is an issue, consider a dwarf version of ‘Limelight’. ‘Little Lime’ grows to 4 to 5 ft.

‘Quick Fire’ – one of the earliest blooming varieties with pure white flowers that turn to pink.

‘Vanilla Strawberry’ – Creamy white blooms age to rosy-pink. New blooms constantly form so you get various color changes at one time.

‘Strawberry Sundae’ – A more compact version of ‘Vanilla Strawberry’, this one only grows to 4 – 5 ft.

‘Pinky Winky’ – This is a two-toned colored hydrangea where the white blooms begin to turn pink at the bottom and remain white at the top. The large flowers can reach up to 16 inches!

‘Berry White’ – Large flowers on upright stems start out white and mature to pink.

‘Bobo’ – A dwarf variety, this one only grows to about 3 ft. tall and 4 ft. wide.
