Osmanthus ‘Goshiki’
Many mistake Osmanthus “Goshiki’ for holly and indeed the common name for this plant is “False Holly”. The variety ‘Goshiki’ means “five colored” and refers to the rainbow of colors on the evergreen leaves which first form as red, then turn to green with touches of creamy white, yellow and pink.
This is a tough shrub that performs well in a variety of conditions, both sun and shade. A compact, mounding habit that generally reaches 5 feet in height with an equal width. Older plants can attain even greater dimensions over time but pruning to maintain size is easy to do.
A versatile plant, it can be used in a variety of ways – as a foundation or specimen plant, in a woodland border, or as a hedge. It is tolerant of a range of soil conditions as long as the drainage is good. A general, all-purpose fertilizer can be applied in early spring.
Tiny, white, highly fragrant flowers appear in the fall season, but it may not flower until the plant is older.
