Mountain Laurel (Kalmia)

Off

Kalmia ‘Carol’

One of the most beautiful flowering shrubs is the Mountain Laurel (Kalmia latifolia), an eastern native that does well in the Pacific Northwest. Despite the name, this isn’t related to English Laurel or Schipka Laurel that is used for hedges. Mountain Laurel is related to the Rhododendron and likes similar growing conditions. Those conditions are characterized by well-drained but moist soils enriched by organic matter. They perform best in partial shade but some sun is helpful for abundant blooming. A position in morning sun and afternoon shade is good or an area with dappled shade.

The unusual flowers first appear as bright buds that open to showy, bell-shaped flowers that appear in clusters. Colors range from pinks and reds to white. Many are characterized by deep-colored buds that open to lighter-colored flowers. Blooms generally appear in late May through early June. The shrub is very handsome even when not in bloom with deep evergreen leaves. Slow-growing to 4-5 feet with some dwarf varieties that grow 2-3 feet.

Current varieties available at Yard N’ Garden Land include ‘Carol,’ ‘Nipmuck,’ ‘Pink Charm’ and ‘Pink Frost’.
