Gaura
Gaura is a beloved perennial that makes a statement in the garden in mid to late summer when its elegant arching canes are draped with delicate blossoms.
This prairie native is a member of the Evening Primrose family. Gaura lindheimeri is commonly known as “White Gaura” although pink varieties are now available. ‘Whirling Butterflies’ is a popular white variety and many people often refer to the plant by that name. It grows to 3-4′ with a 1-2′ spread. Newer varieties have been introduced that sport more compact sizes, some as small as 1-2′. The charming flowers consists of four petals that surround protruding stamens.
This perennial grows best in moist but well-drained soil. Once established, they are drought tolerant but they will look their best with weekly watering. They look great in a mixed border with other perennials or ornamental grasses. They are also nice as a specimen plant.
This plant is hardy to zone 5, meaning that it can withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees.
