  Groundcovers 

Groundcovers offer many landscaping solutions because of their compact, sprawling habits. They can edge the front of a garden border, cover bare areas under trees, fill spaces between stepping stones and trail over edges of walls and containers. Many groundcovers are perennials offering a variety of flowers, foliage and textures. Bloom times vary depending on the variety. Other groundcovers are woody, evergreen subshrubs which keep their foliage and structure through the winter.

When planting groundcovers, make sure to keep them watered the first summer, at least one inch per week. By the following summer it will be established and you can then water it according to its specific needs. Fertilize in spring.

  Hardy Succulents 

Hardy succulents have thick, fleshy leaves and come in many shapes, sizes and colors. They are drought tolerant making them perfect for water-wise gardens, xeriscape landscapes, rock gardens, paths, retaining walls and green walls. Succulents need full sun, though some varieties can take part shade. Many are evergreen, such as sempervivum and some sedums. Others, such as ice plants, many sedums and lewisia die back in the winter.

  Vines 

Add an element of intrigue to your garden with vines. Vines are versatile plants that can be used to create walls and vertical structure, hide unsightly areas and provide privacy. They will grow up a trellis, wall, tree or fence. Wherever you want to fill a vertical space you can plant a vine.

Many vines are perennials with delicate stems such as clematis and honeysuckle. These can weave through other tall plants including climbing roses and trees creating a vertical surface with changing color. Climbers such as wisteria and climbing hydrangea have woody stems and need more support such as a sturdy wall or beam.
