‘Firefly’ Bush Honeysuckle
The first thing you may notice on this striking shrub are the bees. They absolutely love it and are always keeping it busy.
The shrub is Diervilla sessilifolia ‘Firefly’ and even if it didn’t produce the tiny electric yellow flowers that resembles honeysuckle, the foliage alone, with a blend of gold, green, and red would get your attention. The shrub has a mounding habit and grows 2-4 feet tall and wide. It is not picky about soil conditions as long as it is well-drained. However, best results would be in soils enriched with compost or other soil ammendments. Full sun to partial shade.
Diervilla blooms on current season’s growth and can be lightly pruned (up to 1/3) immediately following bloom. The flowers appear in late spring and continue through summer. Plants can also be cut back at the end of winter or very early spring.
Diervilla is named after a French surgeon (Diereville) who discovered it growing in Canada and later introduced it to Europe.
