Cotoneaster
Cotoneaster may not be the most exciting plant in the landscape but it serves a purpose and it is a great performer. In other words, it does what it should do.
Actually, Cotoneaster might bring different images to mind because there are many diverse forms, ranging from tall, shrub-like varieties to groundcovers. In all, there are over 200 species. Today, we are focusing on the groundcover type – Cotoneaster dammeri.
This cotoneaster is known by the common name of “Bearberry”. It is a spreading plant with small, thick, glossy evergreen leaves. Tiny white flowers appear early in the season, followed by red berries. Despite the graceful habit of this plant, the branches actually have a somewhat stiff demeanor.
Cotoneaster dammeri is fast-growing and requires little maintenance. A fertile, well-drained soil is best and a sunny position will produce the most flowers and berries. However, partial shade is fine and good blooming can be achieved with a half-day of sun.
This plant is useful in many situations, specifically as a ground-cover for slopes. It is also very attractive planted on a berm or a rock wall, where it can achieve a lovely, cascading effect.
