Candytuft

Off

A sea of white greets you in a big display as you approach our information desk in the greenhouse.

A beloved groundcover and one of our most requested plants is Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens). The common name does not originate from its appearance but rather from its origin – the island of Crete, once known as “Candia”. The flowers symbolize vitality and a zest for life.

The fact that this plant hails from a Mediterranean region makes it perfect for our climate. Growing it is not that difficult although it does require one important factor – it must reside in well-drained soil as too much moisture will surely rot the crown of the plant. A raised bed or berm would be ideal but it you are planting it at ground level, incorporate soil ammedments like compost or even gravel to improve the drainage. Candytuft can also be grown as a pot plant although keep in mind that the bloom period will not be all-season long. It makes a terrific edging along pathways and borders. For best results, plant in a sunny location.

Candytuft is perennial and will come back year after year. As soon as the spring blooms end, shear the plant back by about half. You should get another flush of blooms later in the season.

We have several varities to choose from –

‘Purity’ is compact with clear white flowers. It grows about 8″ inches tall and will spread to 1 1/2 feet.

‘Masterpiece’ has white flowers with delicate pink centers. The mature size if 12″ by 12″ inches.

‘Snowsation’ has pure white flowers with a slight touch of yellow in the centers. It grows about 8″ x 10″ inches.

Plants are available in gallon and quart pots and retail at 10.99 – 12.99.
