California Fuchsia
If you are looking for a carefree groundcover with pretty flowers that will withstand drought and harsh conditions, California Fuchsia may be your answer. The botanical name is (Zauschneria garrettii (also classified as Epilobium canum ssp. garrettii).
California Fuchsia gets its name from the fact that it is native to California and the flowers resemble fuchsia, although it is not a true fuchsia. The orange/red flowers begin in early summer with the largest flush of flowers occurring in late summer, typically late July and August. Hummingbirds love them!
The foliage is an attractive blue/gray. The leaves usually persist throughout winter, although wet conditions can cause them to become unattractive. It is best to trim back the plant in the fall or early spring. Plants spread by rhizomes and can be vigorous in light soils (such as raised beds). It is therefore best used in a confined area if you do not wish it to spread.
California Fuchsia is happiest in a sunny location, in average soil with good drainage. They will tolerate light shade, but flowering will be best with more sun. It is extremely winter hardy, down to zone 5.
You will find California Fuchsia in the “Z” (for Zauschernia) section of the Perennials in the greenhouse.
