Before You Start

One of the most important criteria in planning out your edible garden is the exposure it will get to direct sunlight. It is essential your garden area receive at least 6 hours of sunlight in the peak of summer. Also make sure access to water is nearby. Consistent water is needed for your vegetable and fruit crops. Don’t worry if your soil isn’t up to par. It’s easy to amend your existing soil with organic fertilizer and quality compost. We also have a ready to go bulk or bagged Raised Garden Bed Mix if you need to fill up your raised beds. See our Soil Mixes & Amendments for more information.

As you start thinking about your garden, you may consider trying companion planting. Certain plants, when grown together, thrive and support each other. The Companion Planting Guide from Burpee is a great source for learning which plants are companions and which plants are enemies.

  Vegetables

The correct time to plant vegetable starts is based on soil and air temperatures. There are two basic groups: cool season and warm season. Cool season vegetable seedlings and bulbs can be planted in early spring for a summer crop and some can be planted in late summer for a fall crop. These include asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, greens, kale, onion, peas, potatoes and rhubarb. Warm season vegetable seedlings are planted in later spring (usually the second half of May) because they require warmer soil and air temperatures. These include beans, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, melons, peppers, pumpkin, squash, and tomatoes.

The smell of herbs on a warm, sunny day just may inspire you get into the kitchen and start cooking! Herbs are a joy to have in the garden. Many are tough perennial plants and they smell amazing. You can plant herbs in pots on your patio, in a sunny kitchen window or out in the garden with the vegetables and fruits. Their strong perfume repels many problem insects and attracts beneficial insects. Additionally, they carry attractive foliage and flowers making them lovely companions to perennials and shrubs.

Herbs need full sun, at least 6 hours per day, to produce the best results. Many herbs are drought tolerant, making them easy care plants for containers and water wise gardens.

Our stock of flowering seeds and bulbs is impressive! In the spring and  summer, our seed racks are full of perennials such as lavender and salvia and annuals such as nasturtium and alyssum. Our flowering bulbs are available twice a year. In the spring we stock summer bloomers such as dahlias and gladiolas. In the fall we stock spring bloomers such as tulips and daffodils.
