One of the most beautiful plants of the Pacific Northwest and the state flower of Washington state, rhododendrons come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Yard N’ Garden Land carries over 40 varieties.

Rhododendrons can be used in various ways in the garden – as focal points, foundation plantings, shrub borders and in woodland borders. Although they have a reputation as semi-shade plants, many varieties can tolerate full sun here in this region because of our mild summers. See the list below for sun-tolerant varieties.

Plant rhododendrons in rich, well-drained soil that is moisture retentive. To enrich your soil, incorporate compost into your existing soil. Set the plant in the planting hole with the soil level in the pot about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above ground level. Apply mulch generously but do not pile it up around the stems of the plant.

Fertilizing is not necessary at planting time but you can apply a fertilizer formulated specifically for rhododendrons and other acid-loving plants the following year. Apply before blooming in early spring and again as new leaves begin to form. In the fall, apply a fresh layer of compost and mulch.

You can keep your rhododendrons looking good by pinching the faded flowers. This also encourages bushier growth. Rhododendrons do not require pruning unless you need to control their size. To avoid this, choose wisely and note the size characteristics before purchasing. We will be happy to assist you in selecting the right rhododendron for your garden.
